Saturday February 15th, 2024
1-2:30PM @ CHI Movement Arts Center
1316 S. 9th Street
I’m the love of your life is a contemporary technique dance class exploring the momentum that comes with loving and falling in love with yourself. Through this practice, we seek to somatically understand how the phrase “I am the love of your life” can be turned inward and become a tool in interrogating, observing, and unraveling the oppressive systems we’ve learned and continually perpetuate. Through personal reflection, we will individually use this somatic experience to understand both the questions as well as the ease of experiencing this kind of self love.
In this class we will begin with floorwork, explore and define momentum with a loose movement phrase and create solo phrases defining this feeling.
Masks encouraged.

DANCE DANCE FOR LIBERATION: Community Teach-In on Organizing and PACBI with Dancers for Palestine
March 8th, 12:00pm - 2:30pm
Studio 34, 4522 Baltimore Avenue in West Philly
There will be tea and cookies!*
Members of the Dancers for Palestine Lead Organizing Team will share our organizing strategy, successes and challenges in organizing the dance field, and the role of arts and culture in the movement for Palestinian Liberation. We will talk about our attempts to move the dance field into more significant, material solidarity with Palestine through the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI). We will address the dance field’s specific histories and dynamics when it comes to organizing, as well as what dance can teach us about organizing within any discipline or community. We’ll answer questions and brainstorm with attendees about their specific struggles and curiosities, including Philadelphia-specific organizing tactics and potential targets for PACBI campaigns.
Dancers for Palestine (D4P) is an autonomous group of dance workers who organize in solidarity with the global movement for Palestinian liberation. Formed during Israel’s genocidal attack on Gaza beginning in 2023, D4P seeks to both cohere and create a dance community which is vocal and active in its support of the Palestinian people.
D4P is a local and international endeavor with a core organizing group in NYC and an ever expanding network of dancers and organizers working toward a dance field free from complicity in genocide, imperialism, white supremacy, and all systems of oppression. D4P’s work has included protest and direct action, political education events, art-based fundraising, and campaigns to move dance institutions into alignment with the Palestinian Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel and against repressive anti-boycott policies.

Saturday February 1st, 2024
1-2:30PM @ CHI Movement Arts Center
1316 S. 9th Street
This is a contemporary technique class with an emphasis on weight and groundedness. We will work through exercises that help us shed the mental and physical tension that may hold us in certain patterns, looking to find organic ways of initiating and moving without the extra decoration. This class will be high energy and not-so-serious; we'll be moving to become more in tune with our bodies and push for growth, not to prove ourselves or to look a certain way.
Encouraged for intermediate/advanced dancers

Expect afro-contemporary flows, floorwork and guided improvisation to ground your mind, body and spirit. We will ignite the power of our vessel exploring movement that activates perception of the senses, weight and texture. Through somatic research, remixing and sampling, let's explore soul embedded possibilities in luscious phrase work.

contact improvisation forms is a space to practice tuning into the body, being with gravity and leaning into our capacities of not knowing. in ci forms : tendering velocity, we will meet each other where we are, and practice saying no. i am interested in exploring trust + patience in points of contact, spiraling and being in a meditation of listening.
ci forms is open to all dancers with an interest or desire for improvisation!

Come explore a variety of floorwork concepts and movements with me. This class will have a little bit of everything from inversions to improv leaving a lot of room to choose your own adventure and move through the class as you like.
Class will start slowly, warming up and juicing up the limbs and joints and then gradually ramp up with some improv work. We’ll start on the floor with a center phrase and progressively work our way to moving in/out of the floor as we move across the space. We’ll finish with a fast, fun, and fierce combination that will make us sweat!
Long pants and long sleeves are recommended since we will be on the floor a lot. I also highly recommend kneepads if you have them.

a tale of odes and rumors with Luna Rous

Inspired by the tools I used/ developed/ found while creating my Uarts thesis, the workshop aims to extend the boundaries of the space we inhabit as dancers, performers, and creators. With this workshop, I hope to examine how we can exhibit the becoming of strangeness, asking ourselves how to find where the regular breaks. We will try to get into a sense of alienation by separating our bodies from ourselves and the space, through a series of meditative exercises that grow into partnerwork and improvisation. We will request insanities to enter the space, creeping up through the cracks of the mundane. !!!this is a touch-heavy class!!! We will be sharing weight and allow for transmission of the control over our bodies. Consent is a living, breathing concept, so we will establish rules and indications in case someone’s comfort level has shifted. Let’s play with duration and awkwardness, let’s find extremes in the physical monotony of the beings we so unfortunately became!!! LET’S MOVE WITHOUT DANCING /// DANCE WITHOUT MOVING
open level!

This class series will focus on awakening, enlivening, and thanking the body for the many ways it supports and moves us. I’m looking forward to sharing these practices, as they have helped me cultivate awareness and presence both inside and outside of movement spaces, and across dance genres.
Masks will be required.
Classes are open to individuals of any and all movement experience.

This class series intends to provide a reliable and lighthearted community space to connect with the body. Each week, we will build a set of methodical warm up ideas that work towards a supple, creative, and dynamic dance practice. We will attend to levels of softness and rigor inside of modern and contemporary dance forms, both choreographic and improvisational. Expect to condition a capacious and dexterous body through floorwork and inversions, and to explore personal and ensemble movement tasks. Contact between dancers will be proposed, but is always optional. This class is appropriate for folks ranging from an advanced beginner to intermediate level of experience in a related movement practice.
