Tamar Gutherz: Contact Improvisation Lab Class Series- Thursdays 7-8:30PM, April 2025

from $0.00

DESCRIPTION: This is a lab space where each class will focus on a different seed.

Hands / Recycling Energy
We'll play with an idea from Aikido, "re-directing a blow”. Re-directing energy as opposed to blocking it. We’ll try to remain soft and supple as we handle weight and keep it moving through our structure, no matter what.
We will try to make our whole body act as our hands do, with the same sensitivity.

Lucid Lunapark
We’ll work with our eyes and practice keeping track of the horizon as we go upside down or share off-balance moments. We’ll notice when we “lose track” and get disoriented. Ideally we want to feel safe and know where we are in space even when our feet leave the ground. When we dance with another person they become our floor. I am the floor and the floor is moving. How do we adapt?

Colliding / Expanding
We’ll explore the muscular tone of expanding under pressure and not contracting, and get into some fundamentals of contact improvisation. Sensing the direction the weight is moving. Alternating between being a surface for someone to roll on and becoming the one who rolls. Spiraling out of a movement, as opposed to muscling through. Following through on spirals as an energetic resource when we get tired or stuck. Doing less to feel more.

Crowd Sourcing
Taking impulses from the outside and letting ourselves be moved by outside forces, whether real or imaginary. We'll work with the idea that we are a sieve, rather than a sponge. How do I take what I need from the environment, and leave behind what I don't? I'm interested in how we can maintain solo research when we dance with others, or when we perform. Acknowledging that we don’t need to physically touch in order to be “in contact”.
