More questions? We’ve got answers!

  • No and yes.

No because you can teach any style/genre/form/anti-form of dance that you want to!! You can explode the very notion of a dance class, or you can teach the most traditional ballet class. Up to you!

On the other hand, yes there are parameters; we have a care ethos that includes guidelines for teachers to hold a safe space.

  • It's up to you!! Class can be for complete beginners, professional/advanced dancers, or any level in between.

  • Yes! All genres are welcome. Tap dancers must have a tap board/mat to lay over the marley floor. At this time, we cannot provide tap mats but teachers and dancers are welcome to bring their own.

  • Yes! We/the studio ask that dancers wear white-soled shoes on the studio floor and to bring a pair of shoes that recently haven't been worn outside. Essentially, shoes that won't scuff or dirty the marley are fine!

  • Yes! You can teach as often as you want, keeping in mind that there are probably other community members who want to teach as well. We actually encourage folks to teach more than once, in order for students to gain some familiarity with your class!

  • All classes are on a sliding scale, participants can pay $10, $15, or $20. No one is turned away for lack of funds.

We (PDS) reimburse ourselves for the space from the money received from participants for class. If a teacher makes $20 or more after we reimburse ourselves for the studio, the teacher would keep 70% and PDS would keep 30%*. If the teacher makes less than $20 after we reimburse ourselves for the studio, the teacher would keep 100% of the profit.

Although this may seem like splitting hairs, or doing a lot of math for a minimal amount of money, it will help keep the program sustainable in the long run.

*You may be wondering, where does the money go that PDS keeps? Right now we're just saving it up, and will use it in the case that not enough is made from class to reimburse for the studio space. In the future if we have extra we may use it for a PDS  festival, or something else that we haven't dreamed up yet.
